Why is methylation So Important? More than 100 biochemical Methylation reactions occur in the body and vital for overall health and well being. Methylation is simply the process of transferring a methyl group –CH3- from one molecule to another. While this may sound mundane, it actually is of great biological significance: it is required for healthy homocysteine metabolism, proper DNA function, neurotransmitter synthesis, detoxification of unwanted compounds, and many other functions. In other words, Methylation is essential for healthy mental function, cardiovascular health, DNA synthesis, and healthy pregnancy outcome. Several key nutrients are required for the optimal function of methylation pathways, including vitamin B6, B12, and folate.
